Your Mess is Mine

Title: Your Mess Is Mine

Author: Stephanie Alba

Release Date: May 31, 2016

Add on Goodreads – http://bit.ly/1SVlycj

Synopsis:

I don't trust people who follow their hearts. Hearts are peculiar things. They're necessary muscles that

keep us alive by pumping blood and oxygen into our veins. Hearts are also compulsory, often making us

foolish. They pull us towards others with a force that aches, burns, and satiates you all at once. Before

you know it that mass of tissue is no longer yours.

Maybe mine never was.

In my case, that draw came from a stranger that left my heart feeling both fulfilled and consumed.

I didn't expect to fight her for the last standby seat to New York City. I didn't plan on letting her get

under my skin. Or the way her vulnerability tore me up inside and compelled me to care for her. She

didn't plan on letting me witness her chaos.

Her anxious heart and my perfectionist mind let things get messy.

And though we didn't plan for it, our interrupting of each others' lives was exactly what we needed.

Sometimes the mess is the most beautiful part of life.

Chapter 1

Hudson

The airport felt like a claustrophobic beehive. People swarmed and whizzed past me, completely

disregarding my personal space. As if travel didn't already suck, as if the process of taking off shoes and

going through X-ray machines where some dude sees the outline of your dick wasn't miserable enough.

The experience might've been better with a gorgeous woman to impress, but of course, I always got

stuck with bearded, hefty men.

Truthfully, I didn't hate traveling. Not by a long shot. Traveling can change your view of the world. For

some people, it can make it seem a lot bigger, filled with cultures and places you can only imagine. For

others, it cinches the circumference of the Earth like a belt tightens around your waist. I loved the idea

of discovering the world. Unfortunately, my late twenties consisted of traveling for work at a constant

rate, which left little time for me to plan vacations I'd hoped for as a college student. But I guess I was

lucky to be where I was when I was. Though I never believed in being in the right place at the right time,

I learned the truth behind that notion that October evening.

Gate C3 in San Francisco International Airport was booming. Sitting there, I had no idea that I'd be

traveling nonstop for the next five months, or that my life was going to radically change. My planet was

suddenly going to feel connected and small, yet devastatingly large. Most importantly, I had no clue that

the change was going to come with a pair of gray combat boots.

My flight to New York City was overbooked, but the accounting firm I worked for liked saving money,

which provided me the torture of waiting on standby. Luckily, I usually had the good fortune to get on

the plane despite being on a waiting list. And things were definitely looking up. The sexy, red-headed

attendant winked when she said I was first up if someone didn't show.

Seeing as my flight didn't leave for another hour, I decided some caffeine would help me work during

the flight. I'd be meeting with Daniel Ellis the following morning, a client who had been our big catch for

years now. This was my chance to prove myself as a CPA in hopes of making partner at the company. I'd

clawed my way up from the bottom, from taking care of tedious residential taxes to kissing every client's

ass. Coffee was absolutely necessary to ensure I didn't fuck things up.

Walking to the food court, I considered how airports never really close and how difficult it must be to

keep them clean. They sometimes feel like an awful combination of restrooms and jail cells. People

come in and out, bringing their germs along with them, leaving that trail of bacteria for the next lot to

pick up. It's filthy if you really think about it. And then you get stuck there with a bunch of bitchy people

trapped in a large holding room till you get shut into a metal tube towards your next destination.

Dunkin Donuts was my solution to being stuck there. Of course, the line was never-fucking- ending. If I

didn't desperately need the caffeine, I would have turned my ass back towards the gate. As I browsed

through e-mails on my phone, I overheard different tenors and tones ordering their fix: nonfat

cappuccino, coffee–black, iced mocha latte, etc. Each one brought me closer to the counter. Finally, with

only one person ahead of me, I looked up.

Petite, toned legs stood before me in skintight black leggings that led to scuffed combat boots.

Impulsively, my eyes trailed up the rest of her body, noticing her luscious ass contrasting her thin waist.

She had squared yet feminine shoulders—a dancer's body, and a perfect one at that. My blood heated

as I started imagining what I'd do to a body like that. She wouldn't know what hit her. But then she

spoke, and that dark-haired beauty let out words in a deep, sensual voice. It sounded like pure seduction

and sweetness tangled together. I suddenly needed to match a face to that sound. Desperate wasn't

something I did, but with her it began with just the sound of her words.

"Hi, an espresso, please," she said, putting her weight on one foot while eyeing the donuts. "Oh," she

hummed, and the tight moan sent a jolt of blood to my groin, causing me to readjust myself. What the

fuck is wrong with me? I'd reacted as such to plenty of women, but not because of their voice, and

certainly not while they stared at sweets. But she was a curious little thing. "And an old fashioned donut

too."

Moving closer, I tried catching a glimpse of her features, but it was no use. The only way I'd see her was

if I was willing to risk looking like a creep, and I was already getting stranger-danger glances from the

guy next to me. He was probably trying to do the same. Judgmental asshole. I waited, the two minutes

dragging as she paid. Finally, she moved for me to order and I was able to take in her profile.

Fuck me.

I unavoidably understood the word stunned, because this girl was stunning. My body became stiff, each

of my functions inept. All I could do was look.

Her fair skin contradicted her dark, almost black mane. Her lips were plump, yet delicate, the bottom

one slightly fuller than the top. The pervert in me instantly imagined what they'd feel like all over my

skin, specifically where I was currently throbbing. She must have felt me watching, because she turned

to look right at me and caught my blatant staring. That delectable mouth offered me an acknowledging

smile. I didn't pay it much attention. Correction: I couldn't pay it much attention. All I could focus on

were her hypnotic, amber-colored eyes. They burned through my skin the way whiskey burns your

throat on the way down, but warms your chest. It hurt. It seared my gaze to hers. That stare left me

dizzy.

My lips parted, and I nervously shifted my weight. My clumsy movement left me bumping into the man

beside me. His scalding coffee poured down my back and into my ass crack. I'd like to say I played it cool,

but there was nothing cool about the burning skin that forced me to emit a pathetic screech.

Yes, a screech. You know, the same sound girls make when they see spiders. Now, mix that in with the

forward hip thrust I did to avoid more coffee on my ass, and well, I was just the quintessence of

masculinity. Fucking Thor right there.

When you get embarrassed, your first reaction is not to check if you're okay. No, it's to see how many

spectators witnessed you making a complete idiot of yourself. The guy behind me apologized profusely,

while the people in line behind me all stared—some wincing, others trying to suppress laughter.

It was incredibly awkward. No big deal. It's not like anyone of value saw it… Except her.

My eyes darted to find her staring, and that's when I felt another kind of burning all over my face. Like

some neurotic asshole, I turned and strutted to the bathroom. I could've pretended it never happened,

but the way she'd looked at me before my mortifying moves had left me exposed. She'd studied me with

what appeared to be equal interest in my body. I wanted that look again, wanted to take in the way she

perused my height, my face, and softly hummed to herself in what seemed like an approving

assessment. It had turned me on. But I couldn't fucking go back, not after that debacle.

I wanted more, but I didn't even know where to begin. Ironically enough, I wouldn't have to go far.

A tiny whimper escapes as the blade goes in a little too deep, my nose clogs and I wonder if this may be it. If I’ll somehow suffocate myself.

I’ll never belong to a Minski.

In the era of free love and nickel beer, I was 'the good girl.' From a family whose finances were wrecked by the sudden illness of my father, my Mom took the reins and went to work. Watching her taught me to value security more than dreams. Every penny counted and was counted twice.

I wrote stories as a girl and laboriously printed them in spiral notebooks, but I put aside my childhood dreams and took a job teaching high school English in a tough inner city school to put my husband through graduate school— until a fight interrupted a lesson on subjunctive mood and verb tense. Two students fought out of the classroom and into the hallway while the rest cheered them on. One picked up the other and threw him over the staircase where he landed with a wet thump.

I quit at the end of the year, went back to school, and studied broadcast journalism, spending more than three decades producing news shows, telling other people's stories, and running educational television stations for universities, and teaching. A bout with cancer, a divorce or two, and the conclusion of raising two wonderful children refined my focus, and I returned to my first love, writing.

Romantic mysteries are complex puzzles solved by complicated, conflicted characters who have interesting relationships, and I love reading them. The Nation series is set on the Navajo Nation, and the setting is always a character– - the dry mountains, and the sweeping deserts, occasionally pounded by rains that turn the dry washes into rivers of mud and debris.

In No Reason to Hide, a female Navajo cop struggles to save her younger brother from an Indian gang, and the evil which stalks him for revenge.

Excerpt:

My younger brother's grin was triumphant. "Don't play yourself or me for stupid. I'm a Cobra."

"Where were you last night?"

"Oh, so now you're not my loving caretaker. You're a cop." He jacked his pants up to his waist. Buttoning and zipping with only one good hand was hard for him.

"Don't you ever talk to me like that. Knowing where you were last night is caring for you. Answer me."

He barked, "I was home. Mom was there. She can vouch for me. She's working days."

If Mom was working day shifts, she could back him up—if he was telling the truth. If he wasn't, well, I didn't want to think about it. "I'll ask Mom."

"Yeah"—he sneered—"you do that. Check up on the little bro."

"Stop acting like a jackass. You have a family who loves you, and you have opportunities if you don't screw them all up. Here, throw your shirt around your shoulders. I'm taking you home, and then I'm going back to work."

"Is Mom going to be at home?" He sounded like a little boy, and his eyes were rounded with fear.

"Mom will be home after work. Would you like me to pick you up a burger? You can eat before you go to bed. I'll call and check on you until Mom gets home."

"Yeah, I'm hungry."

Still not a thank you, but less mouthy. He needed help getting up on the running board and into my police unit. I drove through Burger King and then on to Mom's house. She lived on the Nation in a weather-beaten single-wide where the three of us had grown up. I vividly remembered the day the front door banged shut behind my Dad. What I hadn't known was his back was the last I would ever see of him.

Author Info:

When DeAnne was a little girl she didn’t want to be a doctor, an astronaut or a

firewoman, and she definitely didn’t want to be a writer. She was going to be an

Egyptologist, and that was that.

One day, while working as a library aide at her middle school, DeAnne picked up a

beat up old book called The Reluctant God by Pamela F. Service, mostly because the

cover had a young modern girl with flaming red hair leaning over a mummy in a

sarcophagus. The story wasn’t a piece of literary mastery by any stretch, but it did

have a time traveling Egyptian prince, and a plucky strong willed girl who both

come together to solve the mystery and save the day. That was enough to have

DeAnne grabbing every book within reach ever since.

Her reading taste may have expanded from fantasy, but it never wandered into the

realm of romance until one day her mother handed her a historical romance novel

to read while she was on bed rest with her twins. DeAnne scoffed, surely her mother

didn’t expect her to read such ridiculous fluff, but she was quickly running out of

things to read so she read it and something unexpected happened. She loved it, and

she never looked back.

Born and raised in a tiny town in Oklahoma, DeAnne is married to her best friend

Randy and has four beautiful and equally mischievous children. She works days with

her husband at their graphic design studio and at night she writes love stories. A far

cry from being an Egyptologist, but a better life she couldn’t imagine.

Teaser New 4

Interview:

Special EditionCan you tell us a little about Playing the Game?

PTG wasn’t supposed to happen at first. *spoiler* I had no plan to write a series until Brad died in book one and as I grieved him, yes I grieved him too as it was also a shock to me that he died. Brad kept talking and talking that he wanted his scene to be written, he wanted his own book but I had to figure out a way to make that happen. Yes the book is about Derek but that is why Brad shadows the book so much.

Playing the Game is actually the second book in The Game series, do readers need to read the first book in order to completely understand and enjoy Playing the Game?

Absolutely you need to read book one. You need to get to know each character first and why they say and do the stuff that they do. Yes in book two they’ve grown, but I still feel it’s very important that you understand the development and bond they all have together.

What can you tell us about the first book, The Game?

The Game was written all in fun. Kirsten is my other half really, I’m very straight-shooting and I don’t give anything away when I make a business deal. I am often told I am a very hard person to read which sometimes comes off that I am a b*tch, just like Kirsten. If I changed professions and went into business, Kirsten is exactly how I want to be. I also have a strong bond with my high school friend twenty years later so it was important to me that Kirsten had that too.

What was the inspiration for Playing the Game?

Easy, I wrote a book about my ultra-ego. LOL

What about hockey and the NFL draws you in?

I’m not sure what draws me to hockey, besides that I’m Canadian and it’s a passion we share. When I watch the games at home, I’m loud. I talked to the players, give the coach my coaching opinions and I yell when stupid moves are made. Yet, when I go to a live game I sit and front of my seat never taking my eyes off the ice and I’m as quiet as a mouse. I really am the most boring person to take to a game. As for the NFL, I don’t watch and when I do, I’m lost because it different rules then the CFL.

Do you have a favorite hockey player or team?

My favorite team is the Oilers, there are my home team (you don’t cheer for another team other than your home team, that is just wrong) and don’t make fun of my team either because what you are going to poke fun at me with, I make the same statements. LOL! I don’t have a favorite player because it’s a team effort, not one play is better than another.

While writing Playing the Game plot and outline? If so did you follow it, or did it go off track and turn out differently than excepted?

I write an outline plot for every book and character, however when I start writing and developing each character they start to take over. I have yet to actually write a book that looks anything like my plot and outline. My books always turn out different when what’s in my head when I start to write.

How much control do your characters have over the outcome of the book? Did they throw any curve balls balls at you in Playing the Game?

Yes, the characters have a lot of control over my work, apparently. I find they all become bossy. Definitely curve balls are thrown in, such as Brad- he was not to die and Derek was to finish out his playing career due to an injury, not by choice.

Describe Derek in five words.

Dominate, Fierce, Loving, Caretaker and HOT

Describe Liz in five words.

Soft, Outgoing, Quiet, Nurturing and Passionate

What was going through Derek’s mind when he first held Liz’s son, Ryder?

I think tons of emotions were running through his head at one time. It’s hard to pin point which one to really focus on, a lot was happening at his point in time of the book.

Do you have a favorite scene/moment in Playing the Game?

Chapter twelve is one of my favorites because it’s real life. My favorite line is “Press Cougar Claudia.” LOL it still makes me laugh.

Do you identify with any of the characters in Playing the Game?

I have Kirsten work ethic but I also am entune to Liz’s nurturing.

Do you plan to write more about any of the characters in Playing the Game? Maybe one of Derek’s team members?

Adam and Caroline’s story is next followed by Logan and Steve’s. So far I have no plan to write another hockey book but if I was, I think Jonesy would get a book.

Do you aim for a certain number of pages or words each day?

No, I’m an erratic writer. With so much going on, on the farm at different times of the year it’s hard to sit and write some days. One day I will write eight pages, the next three days nothing then fifteen pages. My goal is to get two books out a year… maybe three.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I didn’t know I wanted to become an author, it wasn’t my intent at all. I have my schooling to teach special needs children and when I stopped teaching to have my family, writing found me when my youngest started kindergarten full time.

You have a number of books released, do you have a favorite?

Currently I have six books published with hopefully two more on the way this year and two more covers complete after that… with another one being developed in August.

When you’re not writing, what can you be found doing?

Reading, traveling, farming, 4H and of course chilling with my family and friends.

What are you writing now? Anything you can tell us about it?

When I come back from A Weekend With The Authors, in Nashville in May I am going to be starting an MC (motorcycle series) Waking Up In Leather. It’s not going to be your traditional MC book, it will focus more on romance but of course there will be crude things involved.

What is something that you find particularly challenging about writing or being an author in general?

The most challenging for me is to stick to deadlines, I absolutely SUCK at them. The other is reaching out to my readers, I wish there was additional ways to meet more of them, find out their story. I love book signings for this reason I don’t necessarily sell myself, I’d much rather meet the readers.

What advice would you give to writers just starting out?

Write for you and no one else! You will not please everyone and nor should you. Write because it’s a passion for you, not for another way to make an income- because it’s that’s the case you will be eating mac and cheese forever.

Do you have any writing rituals? Anything you must have while writing? Coffee? Candy? etc.

Candy, I eat so much candy it’s sickening really and when I edit I binge eat everything.

Who influenced your writing/life the most?

No one influences my writing because I write for me and what I want to read. But I will say this journey all started when I was thirty and I read my first ever book beginning to cover, then the entire series in three days. Thanks to Twilight.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?

I truly can’t thank my readers and bloggers enough. This past year was a nightmare and each and every reader and blogger stuck by me till the bitter end and for that they will always have my gratitude.
