EXCERPT

Tommo took his mug of Cheerios over to his desk and began eating. Over the crunch of cereal, he heard distant fireworks. It wasn’t even eight o’clock yet, and already people were celebrating the New Year. Why was everyone so eager to get to next year, anyway? Were their lives really so bad that they needed to constantly look forward to tomorrow and next week and next month and next year?

Hold on… that noise? He had thought it was fireworks, but… The hair on the back of Tommo’s neck began to prickle. He realised that the popping sound might not actually be distant fireworks. It might be something a lot closer – like maybe a light tapping at his window.
Tommo placed his mug and spoon down on the desk, and carefully finished chewing the contents of his mouth. From the dark window, his own scared reflection stared back at him. Surely he must have imagined the noise. His apartment was four floors up, and there was no balcony. No tree with branches that could be scraping against the window. But, there it was again. A rhythmic tap, tap, tap.

Tommo pushed himself away from the window, his chair rolling backward over the parquet floor. The tapping had now been replaced by a squeaking sound. What the… Was that a circle appearing on the window? Yes, someone was drawing a large circle on the window with their fingernail! He had to be hallucinating. Maybe the milk was off and he was coming down with food poisoning.

Just then, the circle of glass moved. It tipped out of the window and crashed onto his computer monitor. Tommo jumped up in terror, as the glass slid down and landed with a thud on his desk, unbroken. A rush of frigid air flew into the apartment. Tommo gasped, too scared to run or even scream.

He had to get out of here. He had to leave the apartment. But he hadn’t left the apartment in months. Someone or something was out there in the darkness. An arm came through the empty circle of air. Tommo panted in fear, pushed the chair out of his way and backed up against his front door. Someone was climbing through the window. Coming to get him.
In the blink of a cursor, that someone appeared in front of him, staring down at his face with murderous eyes. Tommo shrank back even further, trying to melt into the wooden door, wishing he had the courage to open it and run away from whoever this was.
‘Who are you?’ he squeaked. ‘What do you want? Take whatever you need. Just, please, don’t hurt me.’

‘Tommo,’ the man said. How did he know his name? This man wasn’t like anyone Tommo had ever met before. He was blonde and pale, with piercing eyes and the whitest teeth. He looked like a character from one of his games. He wasn’t quite a man either. More, a boy. But the scariest boy he’d ever seen. Young and old at the same time. Like an angel, or a devil. Not… human.

‘You had a visitor today,’ the man-boy continued, his voice a hissing whisper. The trace of a foreign accent.
‘A visitor?’ Tommo repeated. He felt as though he was watching himself from above, his mind divorced from his body.

‘Yes. A girl.’
‘She came here, yes,’ Tommo stammered.
‘She asked you to do something for her. But you said no. Why did you say no?’
‘I… I… can do it. If you want me to do it. I can do what she asked.’
‘Now.’

‘Yes, yeah, sure. It… it might take a while, though. A few hours at least.’
‘A photograph has been sent to your phone and to your email,’ the man said. ‘Email back when you find a match for the girl in the photo.’

‘What happens if I can’t find a match?’

The man bent down, so his face was millimetres from his own. ‘Do you see the hole I made in your window, Tommo?’

Tommo nodded.
‘Look at it,’ the man said. He took hold of Tommo’s chin and turned his face toward the window, to the newly made hole. The man’s hand was hard and cold like ice. Not like a human hand at all.

‘I can see. I can see the window, and I can see the hole.’
‘Good,’ replied the man. ‘It’s a long way down, Tommo. A long way down.’
Tommo felt sick. He felt the Cheerios working their way back up his gullet.
‘Remember,’ the man said, letting go of Tommo’s chin. ‘Find the girl in the photo.’

And then the man was gone. Just like that. Gone. And Tommo’s Cheerios finally made a reappearance all over the parquet floor.

Excerpt:

She’d thought he’d be easy to find, but the place was SEAL hunk central, with an awful lot of the fit, attractive guys in attendance. While quite a few of them flashed charming grins in her direction, none of them had those unforgettable blue eyes she’d spent the past four weeks seeing in her dreams.

Her earlier assessment had been right. This was hopeless.

Sighing, Hayley turned to go in search of Brad instead and almost smacked right into the broad, muscular chest of a guy in blue camo. She stared at his uniform up close, absently wondering why the Navy wore blue camouflage. It wasn’t like they were ever going to be in a blue jungle. She glanced at the rank on his collar—noting the three chevrons of a petty officer first class—then the nametag sewn on the right hand side of his chest, noting his name—it said WARD—before lifting her head to apologize for practically mowing him down. But when her gaze met his, all she could do was stare. There couldn’t be two men on the planet with eyes that blue. She’d found the SEAL who’d saved her life.

“It’s you,” she breathed.

Okay, that definitely wasn’t the most intelligent thing she’d ever said out loud. But the SEAL smiled anyway, flashing the cutest pair of dimples her way. Hayley’s breath hitched. She’d tried to picture what he looked like ever since that night, alternating between Chris Hemsworth and Henry Cavill and finally settling on a combination of the two. She hadn’t even been close. Petty Officer Ward was even more gorgeous than she imagined. Taller than she was by nearly a foot, he had broad shoulders, dark hair, and a square jaw to go along with those mesmerizing eyes. Now, this was what a superhero should look like.

“It is,” he said. “I’m glad to see you’re doing well, Ms. Garner.”

She’d been so caught up in the memory of the captivating blue of his eyes she’d completely forgotten how sexy his voice was. The deep, rich tones caressed her, making her feel warm all over. Just like they had that night in Africa. Wow, this guy was pure sexy, wrapped in blue camo. She had a crazy urge to ask him to say something else—anything else—so she could hear that voice again.

“Call me Hayley, please,” she finally managed.

She offered him her hand, pulse skipping when he took it. Wow, he had really big hands. A little part of her mind whispered something about the significance of that, but she ignored it. Instead, she focused on the overall sense of strength seeming to pour off him in waves. Being this close to him and getting a chance to take in how tall and muscular he was reminded her of the way he’d picked her up and carried her so effortlessly that night—all while using a weapon.

Hayley had never thought of herself as the kind of woman who wanted to be swept off her feet by a guy, but right now she was thinking this man could carry her anywhere he wanted to.

Damn, this guy was seriously messing with her calm, cool journalist exterior.

“Chasen Ward,” he said.

Chasen. Unusual, but it fit him. Gorgeous name for a gorgeous guy.

She wondered if the guy realized the kind of effect he likely had on every woman on the planet, especially the one standing right in front of him. Probably not, she guessed. Guys were usually clueless about that kind of stuff.

“How did things go over there?” she asked. “After you got me out, I mean.”

She cringed as soon as the words were out. Guess he hadn’t messed with her journalist mojo as much as she’d thought. Crap, now he’d think she was looking for a scoop. Nothing turned people off more than a nosy reporter.

But he merely nodded. The shade from the brim on his hat accentuated his chiseled features as he moved, making them seem even more angular.

“They went well,” he said. “My Team and I got back a few days ago as a matter of fact.”

Her inner Barbara Walters wanted to ask what else they’d done over there, but before she could decide if that was a good idea or not, two other Navy guys in blue camouflage sauntered over. Both petty officers second class, they were tall, well-built, and good looking.

“Hey, I know you,” the younger of the two men said with a trace of a Southern accent. Blond with brown eyes, he had that casual Channing Tatum-thing going on. “Though I hope you don’t mind me saying, you look a lot better now than you did the last time we saw you.” Hayley frowned in confusion at the two men, sure she would have remembered if she’d met them before.

Chasen chuckled. “This is Dalton Jennings and Nash Cantrell. They were with me when we rescued you that night. You’ll have to forgive Dalton for being clueless. He’s taken several classes on how to be charming, but unfortunately, he keeps failing them.”

She laughed and shook hands with both men. Dalton looked so chagrined, she couldn’t help but take pity on him. “Don’t worry about it, Dalton. I’m well aware of how much of a mess I looked that night. Thanks for being there with Chasen and the rest of your Team.”

The SEAL visibly relaxed, giving her another grin. “No problem. Just doing our job, ma’am.”

Dalton might have failed out of charm school—according to Chasen at least—but there wasn’t a woman alive who wouldn’t swoon over that Southern drawl.

“I know it was hard to tell with all the gear we had on,” Dalton continued. “But I was the one doing this.”

Dark eyes suddenly intense, he struck an action hero pose, arms lifted as if he were holding an imaginary machine gun. On either side of him, Chasen and Nash snorted in unison.

“You mean you were the one nearly running into every wall around you because the batteries in your NVGs were dying.” Nash pointed out drily, his dark eyes filled with amusement.

Dalton considered that a moment, then dropped the pose and shrugged. “That might have been me.”

Hayley laughed, unable to help herself. They were both funny—and seriously cute—but she had to admit she was glad when they took off a little while later, leaving her alone with Chasen.

“How is your ankle feeling?” he asked as his buddies walked off toward the pavilion.

“Much better, thanks,” she said.

He looked down pointedly at her foot where it peeked out from under her long skirt. She’d tried not to make it obvious, but she’d been standing with all her weight on her good foot so she could give the injured one a rest. Chasen lifted a brow as if he saw through the little white lie.

Hayley gave him a sheepish look. “Okay, you caught me. It still hurts a little. But it really is much better. Thanks to you.”

“How’s that?”

“If you hadn’t gotten there in time, a messed-up ankle would have been the least of my worries. I don’t know how I can ever repay you for saving my life.”

That playful grin returned. “I’m more than ready to call it even if you consider going out to dinner with me.”

If Chasen were any other guy, Hayley might consider making him work a little harder for a date. But she’d been more than ready to go out with him since he’d loaded her on that helicopter over in Africa. Heck, there’d been a time or two when she’d woken up from an especially nice dream involving the Navy

SEAL when she was ready to do a lot more than date the guy. Rip off his uniform and roll around on the floor with him being one thing that came to mind.

“Dinner sounds great,” she said, quite proud of her ability to maintain her composure.

“Friday night work for you?”

“Perfect.”

Hayley entered her number in his phone while he did the same with hers, then she gave him her address.

“I’ll see you at 1830 hours,” he said, then chuckled. “I mean, six- thirty.”

“I can’t wait,” she said, and meant it.

Touching his fingers to the brim of his hat in a causal salute, Chasen gave her another smile then strode off. Hayley let out a sigh as she watched him go. Damn, he made that blue camouflage uniform look good.

Every person’s life tells a story.

Some are uncomplicated, straightforward, and easy. Things fall into place with a simplicity that boggles the mind.

Others twist and turn, and every day is centered on fighting and scraping, yet never finding victory.

And then there are those who gain an inch only to be knocked back a foot. They love. They fight. They stumble. They fall. But through it all, they stagger to their feet, step back on life’s path, and push through until they win. For these people, happiness is not an illusion. It’s a truth, a promise, worth any effort, any scars, but just out of arm’s reach. It stands at the end of the path, taunting and teasing, tempting them to take one more blow.

And in the end, the battles make victory sweeter. More valued. More precious than ever imagined. More than any one person could hope.

This is Liam’s story.
Loyal, protective, shoulders stronger than Atlas'.
Broken, worn, battered.
Win or lose, he’s ready to fight for what tomorrow brings.

Life. Love. Healing. Hope.

Annie’s eyes widened and filled with shame. Her lower lip trembled as she whispered her apology. “Sorry, Uncle Liam. That wasn’t very nice of me.” Her body curled into itself, and she grew smaller right before his eyes. Tears slipped down her cheeks as her tiny voice cracked. “Daddy wouldn’t be very proud of me, would he?”

“Aww, honey.” His heart melted. That her first thought was of what her father’s reaction might be didn’t surprise him. He longed for the day when she would accept that Tripp wasn’t coming back to them.

Though she tried to be strong for her younger sisters, the burden was too heavy for Annie to carry. Like her mother, she still struggled fiercely with her dad’s death. As the oldest of the three girls, her father’s memory whirled through her mind on constant repeat. Even though more than two years had passed, she sometimes waited beside the door, hoping Tripp would walk through and sweep her up in his arms. More than once, Liam had caught her carrying on a conversation with her dad, reminiscing about the time they’d spent together. The past Christmas had hit her hard, and her uncle had spent most of the day with her tiny body snuggled on his lap, attempting to soothe her and encouraging her to enjoy the day.

No child should need coaxing to open her gifts.

He leaned down and tipped her chin up, forcing her to look him in the eyes. “Baby girl, if your daddy were here, there wouldn’t be enough room to hold the pride he’d have for you.” The sight of her glistening eyes and wet face slammed against his heart. Pain shot through him, and a single tear traced a path down his cheek. His voice cracked under the weight of his grief. “He would see you growing up, being such a good big sister, and helping your momma all the time.” He thumbed the tear from his ruddy cheek, lifted her off the floor, and carried her to the couch.

“And he would snatch you right up and tell you just how proud he is of you, how much he loves you.” His arms tightened around her, trying to calm her shuddering sobs. “I know I’m not him, and I never will be, but I love you, and I’m so proud of you. You’re such an amazing little girl.” He chuckled quietly and tickled her side. “Or maybe not such a little girl, as I’ve been recently reminded.”

His joking words produced the result he wanted. Blinking her eyes at a rapid pace, she looked up at him and cracked a small smile.

“Thanks, Uncle Liam.” She settled back against his chest, her words coming out in choppy huffs. “I really am sorry I was mean to you. I just miss him so much.” Her breath hitched, and her petite body melted against him.

“Oh, sweetheart, I know you didn’t mean it.” He brushed a kiss on the top of her head. “And just remember, there’s nothing wrong with being sad or missing your daddy. We all miss him, every single day.”

He may not be their dad, but he loved those girls more than life, and his primary goal was to ensure their happiness and wellbeing.

Liam squeezed her close as his eyes drifted to the kitchen doorway. Wrynn leaned against the doorframe and mouthed thank you. Her mahogany hair was tangled and unkempt. Stains dotted her sweatshirt. Liam wouldn’t be surprised if those were the same clothes she’d slept in the night before. What he wouldn’t give to see her happy and carefree again. Because grief had a way of aging a person, she looked much older than their twenty-eight years. Her pale face flushed as she wept.

Glad I have Wrynn’s girls to fill the empty. Don’t know what I’d do without them.

His thought made him grimace. He tried not to dwell on his lack of family, but at times, when he was with Wrynn and his nieces, it became harder to fight back the desire to have his own. He often wondered if he was meant to live his life alone because he’d yet to meet the right woman he wanted to share in his life, his love, his family.

“Okay, guys and dolls, let’s eat.” His sister’s hoarse voice broke through his musings.

He wrapped Annie in one arm, grabbed six-year- old Bekah in the other, and turned sideways on the couch to help Maggie climb on his back. Satisfied all three were safe and secure, he stood to his feet and lurched toward the kitchen with giant, fumbling steps. Giggles rang out around him. He placed Annie and Bekah in their chairs, then leaned forward and flipped Maggie over his shoulder. Lifting her above his head, he nibbled on her toes. As her laughter increased, he blew raspberries on her belly before sitting her down and strapping her in her booster seat.

When we came in, I noticed the robe. This will be perfect because I won't have to dig through her drawers. She sits down as I directed while I grab the robe. I can hear her humming, and when I turn around, she’s now trying to yank the shirt she’s wearing over her head.

Arms stuck straight up in the air, unable to move anymore; she murmurs from beneath the shirt, “Uh, Lenox? I’m stuck.”

This time, I do laugh as I walk over to her.

“Stay still. I’ve got this,” I inform her.

Tessa does exactly what I tell her to do as I lift the shirt over her head. I try to keep my eyes off of her, off the smooth skin of her shoulders, off her perky breast.

Kneeling in front of her, I pull off her jeans, and they move over her hips and down her legs. Her smooth, long, beautiful legs. Oh shit, I need to hurry. Once I have them off, I start to stand up, but Tessa stops me when she twines her fingers through my hair. We’re eye level, our gazes locked.

Before I even know what’s happening, she pulls my head forward, pressing her lips against mine.

My mind racing, I freeze as her lips slowly, gently caress mine. Her lips feel so good. I need to stop this, pull away. But, it just feels so damn good. Better than I imagined. She whispers my name against my lips just before she slides to her knees in front of me, running her hands beneath my shirt. My grip on reality slips the moment she deepens the kiss. Pulling her closer, I take everything she wants to give me.

Almost as quickly as it began, it ends. My mother raised a gentleman, and this isn’t very gentlemanly. I lightly grip her shoulders and push her back.

“Tessa, we need to stop. You don’t know what you’re doing. I’d be an asshole if I let this continue,” I state, an edge to my voice because everything in me is at war with the words leaving my mouth.

She gazes at me with a dazed look in her eyes, lips swollen from our kiss. So damn beautiful. Her head dips in a small nod, I reach for the robe lying on the floor next to us, our eyes remaining connected. Pulling the robe over her shoulders, pulling one arm and then the other through the short, silky sleeves.

Once I tie it in front of her, I pull her back against me into a hug. I whisper against her ear, “One day.”

But in reality all she had was loneliness.
Until he showed up.

Yoel’s plan was bulletproof.
Get in and get out, win the title.
He did his homework but not well enough.
He wasn’t prepared for her.

One night changes everything.
One lie blurs the lines.

When the lust and smoke clears will everything just be a false illusion
Or will it be the biggest fight of all?

I draw my eyebrows confused. “I thought that’s how this was working, we have sex- “

“We fuck, Madison. But then you go and start asking me to hold you, asking about my day. My job.” He cuts me off. “You can’t make the rules and then not follow them, but go missing for days.” He pauses taking a breath. “You can show up whenever you want to get fucked and I’m supposed be here waiting? But yet when I call you I get no reply.”

Okay, he was definitely upset. We sit in silence for what feel like forever. I don’t know what to say because, let’s face it, he’s right.

“I’m sorry,” I manage to say.

He doesn’t reply right away, instead he stands up and grabs my chin between his fingers.

“I want you naked. Now.” His tone is hard.

I’ve simplified my life into a three-part process: I binge—I fuck—I come…until I come to my senses. That’s what my world has been ever since she came into my life. And I was perfectly content with it staying that way… Until I actually met her. Mouthy dancer. Blonde bombshell. Elena. My best friend’s soon to be sister-in-law. Enemies before we’d ever laid eyes on each other, we were a match made in Hell—a cautionary tale of how not to get along. But when the spark between us sets our passions ablaze, how do we prevent the unexpected matches from turning our flame into an inferno?

My head says, “Fuck Lukas Griffin.” My clitoris says, “Go ahead!”

I gave in to him, submitted myself to our fiery passion… and it blew up in my face.  I can’t afford to do this again—not when he holds all the cards. Not when he makes all the rules. He’s lured me into a game—a game I’ve never played. A dangerous one. And if I raise the stakes and place another bet on him, will he burn me again? Handsome fashion man undressing woman .
